Do animals also have blood groups like humans?

'In the case of animals blood group is applied to combinations of blood factors. So it is preferable to call it as blood group systems rather then blood groups. Each system has many factors, which are together called blood group factors.

Dr. J. Moustgaard, of the Royal Veterinary & Agricultural College, Copenhagen has identified in cattle ten group systems namely A,B,C,FV,J,L,M,SU, Z and R'S'. Except J and L, all the other group systems have more than one group factor. For example the group factors of the group system A are designated as A{-1}, A{-2}, D, H, Z'. '

Animals and bacteria have cell surface antigens referred to as a blood type. Antigens from the human ABO blood group system are also found in apes and old world monkeys, which have inherited the same system.

First of all I would like to thank you for asking such an interesting question I had never thought about it,so i did a little bit of 'research'.

Yes animals have different blood type (Blood group) too just like humans. In man blood group is applied to single factor. This factor is agglutinogen and is also called antigen. It is found on the surface of red blood corpuscles.

And The Rh factor (used to denote human blood type as well) was first discovered in the Monkey Rhesus

But it do vary from animal to animals apes have a similar blood group structure as we do (our ancestors)

In cats it is often found that blood of one cat can be transfused in another.

We are not different. Humans have highly evolved brains, but the Dolphin has a much larger even more complex brain than humans, and a more complex language. Dolphins are able to visually see sound waves so they can see under sand or in cloudy water and in the dark, all things we have to resort to technology for. Dolphins, like humans evolved to survive in their specific environment, We could not live in the sea like they do because of our bodily limitations, just as Dolphins can not live on land due to their bodies. Humans survive by manipulating their environment to make it suitable for them to live in, where many other animals change to fit their environment. We are not alone though, birds and bees build nests, monkeys and apes use tools like sticks or stones to get food, and there are a variety of other animal innovations that they have developed to overcome problems. We differ from most animals by the degree and scope that we change the world to suit us, Our unique physical characteristics, having hands with opposable thumbs, walking upright, and our mental process, using advanced logic in planning such as mathematics is not seen in other animals, though planning and cooperation are observed in many.
