India is also building two indigenous Aircraft Carrier but they are far away (May be 2017, 2022). At the same time Navy has come to play a much bigger role in India's diplomacy and defence strategy. China has been building too many ports around India-Hambantota (Srilanka), Gawadar (Pakistan), in Mayanmar, in Seychelles. It has also got right to explore a part of Indian Ocean, which traditionally was considered to be under Indian domination. China's activities in South and East China sea have become a little taxing. Iran is threatening to disturb the Strait of Hormuz. There are reports that China may be building Nuclear Power Super-carriers. How many Aircraft Carriers should India have in this situation? Even by 2022 we will not have more than three- INS Vikramaditya, two newly being built (INS Viraat will retire). Will these be enough or Government should start the process of construction of more of them (It takes too much of time to build them)? Anil Kokodkar, former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission had said that India was capable of building Nuclear Aircraft Carrier |
