RIZWAN AZMAT I love golf, but I don't love golf in the Olympics. The fact that they, like basketball and hockey, aren't going to use amateurs (which I always thought was who the Olympics were aimed at) means one thing to me: It's a money grab, plain and simple. Golf has been struggling. Rounds are down, costs are up. Ratings are down. This move is an attempt to get people to want to play. We're almost tapped out in America, so they're looking to other countries, especially China. But here's the thing: how are the average Chinese citizens, or any others (like Brazilians, for example) going to get into golf? We're constantly hammered with the 'you NEED to buy this $400 driver, and buy a new one every year, or else you aren't really golfing' bull$hit. If Americans are having a hard time swallowing that, how are people from a country who's annual average salary going to do it? How are they going to play, when most of the courses are $100 a round 'signature' (a famous golfer designed it) courses? |
