San Francisco, a 16th-century church and convent is located in Limas historic center, just a block away from the main plaza, the Presidential Palace and Limas Cathedral.
The church is considered masterpiece of baroque colonial architecture. Its latticed cedar ceilings and extensive library have survived earthquake and fires.
Visitors can stroll the garden courtyard lined with centuries-old azulejos, decorative Sevillean tiles and frescos depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi.
A famous 1656 painting of the Last Supper shows disciples eating guinea pig, and tropical fruit and drinking from gold Inca cups.
The highlight is a labyrinth of catacombs, a colonial era public cemetery where commoners were buried until 1821.
The bones of 25,000 Lima inhabitants remain, neatly stacked in piles up to 6 meters deep.
